Our daycare center from the outside.

The ARCOBALENO daycare center is located on the mezzanine floor of a residential building in a traffic-calmed area of the Mitte district, in the Wedding-Gesundbrunnen neighborhood. The fenced-in area of the residential complex includes a garden with a playground. There is a large playground directly opposite the facility, on the other side of the street. There are also several small playgrounds on Grüntaler Straße.

After about a ten-minute walk, you reach Humboldthain Park with its many lawns, trees, and other play facilities.

The Gesundbrunnen Center is also located there. The subway (U 8), S-Bahn (Ringbahn, S 1, S 2, S 25), and a bus station (248) can also be found at Gesundbrunnen. After a seven-minute walk toward Osloer Straße/Grüntaler Straße, you can take the tram (50, M 13).

History

In July 2016, Ki. E. Ka. e. V. took over the former Kiezeulen daycare center at Eulerstraße 19a from the Kultur Verein Prenzlauer Berg cultural association. Ki. E. Ka. e. V. would like to expand its range of bilingual daycare centers (German/Italian).

The name of the daycare center is changed to "Kita Arcobaleno."Thanks to its location in the Wedding neighborhood, its proximity to Prenzlauer Berg/Pankow, and its expansion into a German-Italian daycare center, Kita Arcobaleno is a meeting place for diversity and multiculturalism. German and Italian are offered as languages of communication.

At the ARCOBALENO daycare center, 36 children aged between one and four are cared for in two groups with a small age mix and a group size of 18 children each.

At around the age of 4, the children transfer to the Piccoli Artisti daycare center at Eulerstraße 21 at the beginning of the new daycare year.

Bilingual education

"The limits of my language(s) are the limits of my world" – Ludwig Wittgenstein

Italian and German are offered as languages of communication in our institution, i.e., each language is assigned to a specific person. In everyday life, this means that both languages are taught quite naturally and as a matter of course.

From the outset, both languages are incorporated into the activities and accompanied by facial expressions and gestures. All activities are conducted in the language of the respective teacher.

To bring the Italian language to life, we draw on aspects of culture and history, for example by celebrating festivals such as Befana at our facility. The children choose their language themselves and decide for themselves whether they want to speak to the teacher in German or Italian and which language they want to speak among themselves.

All teachers speak to German-speaking parents in German. Italian-speaking parents are spoken to in Italian by Italian teachers and in German by German-speaking teachers.

Notices and information are provided in Italian and German so that parents can find out about our services in their preferred language.

"In viaggio con Marco Polo" – "Traveling with Marco Polo"

The project focuses on the figure of Italian traveler Marco Polo, who lived between 1200 and 1300. From Venice, Marco Polo embarks on a journey that will lead him to discover the Orient and its wonders. Through his work "Il Milione," which is known throughout the world, the children embarked on a journey of discovery to other civilizations, traditions, landscapes, and stories. The project aims to strengthen Italian language skills, storytelling, and communication skills through reading "Il Milione" and artistic representations.

March–May 2025: "Cibo, città, sostenibilità" (Food, City, Sustainability)

This year, our pilot project was dedicated to sustainable nutrition and consisted of alternating classroom instruction and cooking workshops. In the cooking workshop, the children learned about the importance of healthy eating and cooked recipes using regional and seasonal 0-km products. The concept of sustainability and the importance of reducing water and energy consumption were also explained to the children. This project was conducted in Italian to enable the development of specialized vocabulary.

health promotion

The children in our facility should learn the basics of a healthy and natural lifestyle with us as early as possible. They should learn health-conscious behavior in a playful way by following examples and practice and apply this in everyday life.

These include:

Basics of a healthy and natural lifestyle
Healthy and varied diet

A healthy and varied diet

We offer mainly natural organic products and foods with low sugar content. Our cook prepares lunch every day, ensuring variety. The afternoon snack selection is also diverse and varies daily. Fresh, regional, seasonal organic fruit and vegetables are also available every day. Our herbal and fruit teas contain only natural ingredients and/or flavors. Still water and tea are available for the children throughout the day. The children are encouraged to drink.

Exercise, relaxation, spending time outdoors

Since it is human nature to move, movement also forms the basis for a child's overall development. Sufficient physical activity and sensory experiences have a positive influence on children's sensory, emotional, motor, social, and physical development.

That is why sufficient exercise is an important part of promoting health for us. We strive to offer sufficient opportunities for exercise in everyday life and to go out into the fresh air every day, in almost all weather conditions, to exercise in nature. This gives the children plenty of opportunity to test themselves, break new and unknown ground, and strengthen their immune systems.

We also offer guided exercise programs (e.g., weekly sports activities) at the daycare center.

It is just as important to find time for relaxation and rest in order to recharge your batteries. That is why, among other things, we have an afternoon rest after lunch, during which the children can listen to stories (read aloud), sleep, or rest. Exercise and relaxation should alternate, i.e., for example, after a quiet and concentrated activity, there is an opportunity to let off steam in the garden.

hygiene

In addition to washing your hands regularly before meals and after using the toilet, daily hygiene includes blowing your nose, combing your hair, and brushing your teeth after lunch.

Depending on the age of the children, "toothbrushing training" takes place two to three times a year in cooperation with the LAG (State Working Group for the Prevention of Dental Disease).

Mental and social well-being

To achieve this, it is important that children enjoy going to daycare, feel comfortable in their group, and make friends. They move confidently and freely within the group and have developed trust. They have the opportunity to express their feelings and needs freely, know where to get help, and how to resolve conflicts.

They know their strengths, talents, and special qualities. The goal is for children to be aware of their individual health resources and to manage them responsibly in the long term.
